When the Body Says YES

When the Body Says YES

Living with an invisible illness or a hidden struggle means every day comes with a question mark. Some mornings, I know the answer the moment I open my eyes. Before my feet even hit the floor, my body lets me know what kind of day it’s going to be. Not in words, but in feeling. And from there, I adjust. Plans shift. Expectations soften. I meet the day where it is, not where I wish it would be.

Over time, I’ve learned this isn’t about pushing harder or proving anything. It’s about listening. It’s about doing what I can with what I have that day and letting that be enough.

So when the body says yes, I pay attention.

When I feel that spark of energy or clarity, I seize the moment. I lean into it. That might mean diving into a project that’s been waiting, following a creative nudge, or simply getting outside and breathing in fresh air. Every morning, I walk Bella, our Labrador retriever. Some days it’s ten minutes. Other days it’s forty five. The distance changes, but the commitment doesn’t. I walk every day. That consistency matters more than the duration.

On yes days, I also try to set small goals. Nothing fancy. Nothing overwhelming. Just an intention that gives the day a little shape. Do I succeed every time? Nope. But I try. And trying reminds me that progress doesn’t have to be loud to be real.

And then there’s celebration. This part matters more than we think. I take time to notice what my body allowed me to do. Sometimes that win is finishing a task. Sometimes it’s savoring a cup of coffee. Sometimes it’s laughing with someone I love or doing one small thing that brings me joy. We all have invisible pom poms cheering us on. We just have to let ourselves hear them.

Before my day really begins, I say this quietly to myself. Today feels like a great day. And if that feeling fades, I won’t get discouraged. I’ll let it go, because there is always tomorrow. Tomorrow brings a new day with new possibilities.

Multiple sclerosis is known for its unpredictability. The uncertainty can mess with your head if you let it. This simple affirmation gives me an out. A way to offer myself grace instead of judgment. A way to stop beating myself up when a day doesn’t go as planned.

I don’t even know where this idea came from. I just know it feels good. Lighter. Kinder.

So maybe this is your permission slip. Not to do more, but to listen more. To trust what your body is telling you instead of arguing with it. When it says yes, lean in gently. When it says not today, believe it. Neither response is a failure. Both are information.

Living this way has changed how I see myself. I’m no longer measuring my worth by what I produce or how much I push through. I’m learning to measure it by how honestly I show up for the day I’m given. Some days that looks like movement and momentum. Other days it looks like rest, quiet, and letting go of expectations I never needed to carry in the first place.

What surprises me most is how much lighter life feels when I stop fighting reality. When I stop treating my body like an obstacle and start treating it like a guide. The days don’t magically become easier, but they become kinder. And kindness, especially toward ourselves, changes everything.

If this landed with you, sit with it. Try the morning affirmation. Let it create a little space between how you feel and how harshly you judge yourself. Notice what shifts when you allow today to be today, without dragging yesterday’s disappointments or tomorrow’s worries into it. Sometimes the most powerful yes isn’t about action at all. It’s about choosing grace, again and again.
